Mad Men - Episode 6When I was growing up in New York in the ’60s, my family liked to take weekend trips to the Amish Country in Pennsylvania. One time we stayed at the Howard Johnson’s Motor Lodge in York. It had that great entrance way, all orange and blue, and of course a restaurant attached. Best of all was the heated pool.

So whenever we went back, we always asked if we were going to stay at the the Howard Johnson’s.

By the early ’70s, the Howard Johnson’s in Times Square had became a favorite hangout. The all-you-can-eat fried chicken or clams pulled us in. And for dessert, you could choose from 28 different flavors of ice cream.

Can marijuana kill you?

By Steve Bloom
23 Mar 2012

Major marijuana myth: pot use use can be a cause of death. So say many anti-drug warriors, such as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who recently wrote to a constituent that “marijuana and other narcotics” can lead to death.

High Times shooting Snoop Dogg

Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa by Mark MannI’m happy to see Snoop Dogg on the cover of High Times for the third time. I was instrumental in making the first two happen.

Back in 1999, when I was the weed mag’s music editor, I’d long had my sights on Snoop but he was playing hard to get. Snoop had had legal problems and his label Death Row put the kabosh on any interviews or photo shoots in High Times. But when he moved to a new label, No Limit, the door Read more.....

Say it aint so, Steve DeAngelo

I’m disappointed in Steve DeAngelo, who stated at the end of the fourth and final episode of Weed Wars: “I don’t believe in legalizing cannabis for recreational use.”

DeAngelo is the star of Weed Wars, which Discovery has been accused of stealing. Even worse in my mind is his (and his brother Andrew’s) blatant Read more.....

Eighty percent of the books in the People’s Library have perished, according to Occupy Wall Street librarians. “I want our books back,” Frances said at a press conference on Nov. 22. “I want our space back. I want our movement back.”

On the morning of Nov. 15, NYPD and DSNY swooped into Zuccotti Park and shut down the hub of the OWS protest movement. All belongings not taken quickly were hauled off by sanitation workers. That included the 5,000-book People’s Library.

When most people think of Steve Jobs, they think of Apple computers, the iPod, iPad and iPhone. When I think of Steve Jobs, I think of Breakout, my favorite video game of all time. Back when he was a bearded, barefoot, drug-taking hippie, Jobs worked for Atari, the video game pioneer based in Los Gatos in the heart of Silicon Valley. Jobs worked at Atari as an engineer before he started Apple with fellow nerd, Steve Wozniak.

The story of Breakout has always fascinated me. Basically it’s an advanced version of Pong, which was Atari’s first hit video game. The goal is to break through walls of bricks. Advance and the formations change and of course it gets harder. Until Space Invaders, I dropped hundreds of quarters into Breakout Read more.....
